Supportive and thorough

Before the assessment I discuss the problem with the parents, or in the case of students and adults, with the individual themselves. This would normally include early development, relevant medical history and educational history to date. To facilitate this parents or students are asked to complete a short questionnaire. Information from the child’s school is often useful and a questionnaire is provided for the purpose. In some instances parents may not wish to involve the school at this stage, in which case the parental questionnaire alone is sufficient.

The child or student is then given an intelligence test to determine their overall level of intellectual functioning, as well as finding specific areas of strength or weakness. Attainment tests are then given to check the level they reached in reading, spelling and mental and written arithmetic. According to individual needs other diagnostic tests may be carried out.

For children the assessment session is presented as an enjoyable activity with games and puzzles as well as some school based work.

Following the assessment the results will be discussed with the parents or individual with suggestions for follow up action.

Two copies of the written report will be sent on within three weeks of the assessment date. This will include all the test results and will contain specific recommendations to deal with the problem.
